Why stacked discounts are smaller than they look
"20% off, then a further 10% off" sounds like 30% but is 28%. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 100 becomes 80, and 10% of 80 is 8, leaving 72. Each extra discount shrinks the base for the next one. When you offer stacked discounts yourself, quote the combined percentage so nobody feels misled.
Discounts in quotes and proposals
A discount on a proposal is only persuasive when the client can see what it is a discount from. Show the list price, the discount as a line, and the final price. Tie it to something the client gives you: a longer commitment, a deposit, a testimonial, or a quieter delivery window. An unexplained discount teaches clients that the first number was padding. Finding the percentage between two prices
Divide the saving by the original price, never by the sale price. From 250 to 200, the saving is 50 and 50 ÷ 250 is 20%. Dividing by 200 would give 25%, which overstates the deal. The same logic in the other direction is a price increase, covered by the price increase calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order of stacked discounts matter?
No. Multiplying by 0.8 then 0.9 gives the same result as 0.9 then 0.8. The order only matters for how it reads on a receipt.
Can I enter a fixed-amount discount?
Convert it first: a 30 discount on a 250 price is 12%. Enter 12 in the discount field, or use the "between two prices" mode with 250 and 220.
Is VAT applied before or after the discount?
Usually the discount is applied to the net price and VAT is added on the discounted amount, but check your local rules. The VAT calculator handles the VAT step.
