Hours to Decimal Converter
Paste one time entry per line, such as 1:30, 2h 15m, 90m or 1.5h. You get each entry in decimal hours, the total in both formats, and the invoice amount if you enter a rate. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Why 1:30 is 1.5, not 1.3
Clocks count minutes in sixtieths, invoices count hours in hundredths. Thirty minutes is half an hour, so 1:30 is 1.5 decimal hours. Fifteen minutes is 0.25, twenty minutes is 0.33, forty-five minutes is 0.75. The conversion is minutes ÷ 60. Typing 1:30 into a spreadsheet as 1.3 undercharges by 12 minutes on every such entry, and the error compounds across a month of timesheets.

Rounding rules for billing
Most freelancers round each entry to the nearest 6 minutes (a tenth of an hour) or 15 minutes (a quarter). Rounding up to the next quarter hour is common in legal and consulting work but should be stated in your terms, because clients notice when four 2-minute emails become an hour. A fairer default is to track to the minute and round only the daily or weekly total. Whatever rule you use, apply it consistently and say so on the invoice.
Worked example: a week of 7:45, 8:10, 6:30, 8:00 and 4:20 is 34 hours 45 minutes, which is 34.75 decimal hours; at 80 per hour that is 2,780.
Timesheet software usually exports decimal hours already. This tool is for the other cases: notes on paper, calendar blocks, phone timers, or a client who sends hours as 7:45 and wants to know what they will be charged.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the total sometimes differ from adding the displayed decimals?
Each displayed decimal is rounded to two places, but the total is computed from the exact minutes, so three 20-minute entries total exactly 1:00 and 1.00 hours. The total is the figure to invoice.
Can I enter plain decimal numbers too?
Yes. A line like 1.75 is taken as decimal hours and passed through unchanged.
Does it handle more than 24 hours?
Yes. Enter 30:00 or 30h for thirty hours.
